Shirley, who has become a significant voice through his online video reports, recently shared his perspective on his rapid ascent, his journalistic approach, and the critical stories often overlooked by mainstream outlets.
From Vlogs to National Spotlight
Shirley’s journey into journalism wasn’t a straight path. He described how his early days involved creating vlog pranks, a hobby that gradually evolved as his interest in current events grew. “When I was younger, I’d make vlog pranks, and then I started to get a little bit older and wanted to see what was happening in the world. And it turned into journalism,” Shirley explained. He admitted that he initially didn’t recognize his activities as formal journalism, viewing them more as YouTube videos on engaging subjects. This unconventional start has led him to a position of considerable influence. “And now I’m one of the biggest and most well-known journalists in America, in the world, actually,” he stated.
Defining his unique style, Shirley described it as a blend of independent YouTube journalism and documentary filmmaking, carving out a new niche in online reporting. “I think that’s a good mix, like an…independent YouTube journalist, like it’s journalism with a bit of documentary style as well, so it’s kind of different than what anyone has ever done before as far as this new realm of YouTube journalism,” he said.
The Minnesota Fraud Investigation’s Impact
A pivotal moment in Shirley’s career was his investigation into the Minnesota fraud scandal, particularly the “Feeding Our Future” case. The video report on this scandal achieved remarkable traction, exceeding 100 million views on the platform X (formerly Twitter). “When I saw it hit 100 million views, I had never seen a video get to 100 million views on X before. And then it became shared by some of the biggest voices in the world as well,” Shirley recalled. His reach extends to a substantial following, with 1.7 million followers on X and nearly 2 million subscribers on YouTube. His work has garnered attention and shares from notable figures, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Elon Musk, and FBI Director Kash Patel.
Investigative Philosophy: Going Straight to the Source
Shirley emphasized his commitment to rigorous investigation, prioritizing primary sources when developing new stories. “I take all the information that’s public from the government and I go straight to the source,” he stated. This direct approach aims to ensure accuracy and depth in his reporting.
Despite his successes, Shirley feels that many crucial issues still lack adequate public attention. He pointed to the national fentanyl crisis as a particularly concerning area that, in his view, has not received the sustained focus it deserves. “On a national level, I think the fentanyl crisis in the United States is really bad,” Shirley commented. “I’ve done a few videos on that, but people seem to not want to stop the fentanyl crisis from happening.”
Navigating Dangerous Territory
Shirley’s investigative work has occasionally placed him in challenging and potentially dangerous situations. He recounted experiences in the favelas of Brazil, Kenya, and Philadelphia as particularly harrowing. “In the favelas of Brazil, I thought I was going to die. That was a little scary,” he said. “In Kenya and Philadelphia as well, that was pretty dangerous.”
Covering the Southern Border Crisis
His fluency in Spanish played a significant role in his coverage of the U.S. southern border crisis. Having lived in Chile and witnessed the influx of Venezuelan migrants, Shirley felt compelled to investigate the situation upon returning to the United States. “I had heard about what was happening. I was living in Chile at the time. And I started to see what was happening with Venezuelan migrants coming into Chile,” he explained. “When I came back to the United States, I started looking into what was going on at the southern border.”
His ability to communicate in Spanish allowed him to uncover and report on critical details that might otherwise have been missed. “And since I could speak Spanish, I started to reveal what was actually happening. And people didn’t know that children were being smuggled. 17-year-old girls were coming over all by themselves. 12-year-old girls were all coming over all by themselves. And I kind of started to showcase what was happening from the border all the way to the shelters in New York City,” he said.
Faith as a Motivator
Shirley attributes his drive to pursue truth and expose wrongdoing partly to his faith. Following a two-year mission with the LDS Church, he sees his work as aligned with his religious principles. “Well, I think our faith invites us to look for the truth and expose evil,” Shirley stated. He drew a parallel to biblical narratives, noting, “Like, the scriptures, the Bible, everything, it’s a bunch of strong men exposing what’s happening as well, and I think that’s kind of lost.”
Vindication Through Convictions
Shirley views the recent guilty plea of Fahima Egeh Mahamud, a key figure in the Minnesota “Feeding Our Future” scandal and daycare fraud scheme, as vindication for his reporting. He contends that his investigations have been unfairly challenged by mainstream media and certain political factions. “Well, numbers don’t lie, and convictions don’t lie either,” Shirley asserted. “The largest daycare in Minnesota, government funded, just pleaded guilty today.” This outcome, he believes, substantiates the accuracy and importance of his journalistic efforts.
