More than two months have passed since Brooke Hanlon, a 35-year-old psychotherapist and mother, was found dead in her Chester, New Jersey home. The case, marked by an unusual level of official silence, has left investigators and the public alike searching for answers. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, leading the investigation, has yet to identify a suspect or even a person of interest in the homicide, a situation that veteran private investigator Carl DeFazio describes as unlike anything he’s encountered.

A Case Shrouded in Silence

Brooke Hanlon was discovered on June 6, having suffered multiple stab wounds. Her husband, Conor Hanlon, made the initial 911 call, reporting that his wife was unresponsive. Responding officers pronounced her dead at the scene, with the death immediately classified as suspicious. Adding to the sensitive nature of the situation, the couple’s 12-month-old baby was present in the home at the time but was unharmed.

The lack of public information from the prosecutor’s office is fueling considerable speculation. However, DeFazio, a former U.S. Marine and retired NYPD officer, suggests that the silence might be a strategic move. “I always look at what they’re not telling you,” DeFazio explained. “They always, especially in a homicide case, hold one or two things back that only the perp would know.” This tactic, he notes, can be crucial in verifying the identity of the perpetrator once apprehended.

Investigative Priorities and Public Scrutiny

In high-profile homicide investigations, DeFazio points out that initial 911 audio recordings and the presence of family members at the scene are typically among the first pieces of evidence investigators meticulously examine to establish a clear timeline of events. The early stages of any homicide probe are considered critical for preventing potential missteps that could jeopardize the entire case.

“I always start at the beginning — the crime scene — and work my way out,” DeFazio stated. “A lot of investigators will go in there with a suspect and try to make the facts fit their suspect. That’s the wrong way to do it.” He emphasizes the importance of a methodical approach, questioning what might have been overlooked: “Did they interview the neighbors? Did they rope off the house? Did they take DNA samples? Did they find a crime weapon? Was there a struggle? Were there any defensive wounds? I’d really love to see the ME’s [medical examiner’s] report.”

The Role of Secrecy in Complex Cases

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office has released a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) log that indicates investigative activity at the Hanlon residence over several days following the incident. While this log provides a glimpse into the ongoing efforts, it offers no specific details about the direction of the investigation.

DeFazio elaborated on why law enforcement agencies often withhold information in complex homicide investigations. “Investigators in complex homicide cases must audit every detail from day one—ranging from financial policies like life insurance to underlying personal relationships—which often explains why police hold back information while piecing together a timeline.” This careful management of information is intended to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure that any eventual suspect is identified through irrefutable evidence, rather than circumstantial leaks.

Community Unease and Unanswered Questions

Neighbors of Brooke Hanlon have previously expressed that they remain on edge, constantly vigilant due to the presence of an unknown assailant potentially still at large. The lack of definitive information from authorities does little to quell the underlying anxiety within the community.

Conor Hanlon has not been charged with any crime or wrongdoing, and repeated attempts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful. As the investigation continues behind closed doors, the community and the family of Brooke Hanlon await clarity in this deeply unsettling and unusually secretive case.
