NJ Mother Charged After Son’s Fatal Boating Accident on Memorial Day

A New Jersey woman is facing serious charges after a Memorial Day boating accident on Barnegat Bay resulted in the death of her 28-year-old son. Authorities allege that Jennifer L. Pearson, 59, was operating her vessel while under the influence of alcohol when it struck a channel marker, leading to the tragic incident.

Tragic Collision on Memorial Day

The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. on Memorial Day near the Brant Beach Yacht Club in Long Beach. According to a New Jersey State Police news release, Pearson was at the helm of her 23-foot center console boat when it collided with a channel marker. The impact reportedly sent her son, Gunnar Pearson, and his girlfriend overboard into the water.

Gunnar Pearson was rushed to a local hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries. Four other individuals on board sustained minor injuries and were also hospitalized. The State Police confirmed that Pearson surrendered herself at the Tuckerton Station on Wednesday, August 19, and is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail.

Charges Filed Against Mother

Jennifer L. Pearson has been charged with several offenses, including death by vessel, a second-degree crime. Additional charges include operating a vessel under the influence, reckless operation of a vessel, operating without a required Boating Safety Certificate, and failure to maintain a proper lookout. These charges stem from the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Blood Alcohol Level and Statements

Court documents obtained indicate that Pearson’s blood alcohol content registered between 0.09% and 0.12%, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08% for operating a vessel in New Jersey. Investigators noted the smell of alcohol upon her arrival to speak with them. Pearson reportedly stated that she had consumed two alcoholic beverages earlier that afternoon.

Remembering Gunnar Pearson

An online obituary described Gunnar Pearson as a “kind, funny, and deeply caring” individual. He had recently completed renovations on his first home in Forked River. An avid outdoorsman, Gunnar enjoyed a wide range of activities including skiing, fishing, boating, running, and hunting.

The obituary further highlighted his appreciation for time spent with loved ones. “He found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved—whether at home, on the beaches of Long Beach Island, on the ski slopes of Stratton, Vermont, or during family vacations in Maine. These moments together meant everything to him and will remain treasured by those who were fortunate enough to share them,” the tribute read.

Ongoing Investigation

The fatal boating accident remains under active investigation by the New Jersey State Police. The circumstances of the collision, including the alleged impairment of the operator and the failure to maintain a proper lookout, are being thoroughly examined.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of responsible boating practices, particularly regarding alcohol consumption and adherence to safety regulations. The loss of Gunnar Pearson underscores the potentially devastating consequences when these guidelines are not followed.
