Flamethrowers, Crossbows Seized from Man Outside NC Church
A man carrying an arsenal including two flamethrowers, crossbows, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition was apprehended outside a church in High Point, North Carolina, on Sunday. The incident prompted a swift response from law enforcement, who took the suspect into custody without any injuries being reported.
Suspicious Activity Reported
The High Point Police Department received a 911 call on Sunday morning reporting an individual described as an “armed person sitting in the parking lot” of Wesley Memorial Church. The caller further noted the man was wearing camouflage and appeared to be carrying a firearm. Fortunately, an off-duty officer attending services at the church was able to locate the suspect quickly. Within minutes, additional officers arrived on the scene and successfully detained the man, identified as William S. Milliken III, 44.
Discovery of Extensive Arsenal
Following Milliken III’s arrest, a search of his truck revealed a disturbing collection of items. Authorities discovered two flamethrowers, two crossbows, more than 500 rounds of ammunition, several rolls of black duct tape, three knives, and a quantity of oxycodone pills. Also found was a launcher powered by CO2, designed to mimic the appearance of a handgun.
Notebook Details Disturbing Plans
Further investigation, as detailed in court documents, uncovered a notebook belonging to Milliken III that contained alarming information. The notebook reportedly listed addresses of various churches, schools, and public buildings, along with GPS coordinates. The suspect was also found to possess body armor, radios equipped with police scanners, keys for handcuffs, and a large-scale map of North Carolina.
Charges Filed Against Suspect
William S. Milliken III faces multiple charges, including possession of a weapon of mass destruction, impersonating a law enforcement officer, and possession of a controlled substance, specifically Schedule II. He is currently being held at the Guilford County Jail, with his bond set at $250,000.

High Point Police Chief Curtis Cheeks III expressed his relief and gratitude for the officers’ swift intervention. “Thanks to the quick action of our officers, a man armed with weapons was taken into custody before anyone was hurt,” Chief Cheeks III stated. He emphasized that the officers’ prompt response prevented a potentially dangerous situation from escalating, ensuring the safety of everyone attending church services and allowing them to return home securely.
