The Buffalo Bills have officially inaugurated their state-of-the-art new stadium, a significant upgrade from their previous home at Highmark Stadium. The ribbon-cutting ceremony this week welcomed several notable figures, including team owner Terry Pegula and Mary Wilson, the widow of former owner Ralph Wilson. New York Governor Kathy Hochul was also in attendance.

Hochul’s Stint as Cheerleader

During the event, Governor Hochul, seemingly aiming to energize the crowd, attempted to initiate a traditional Bills chant. Dressed in team colors and sporting a Bills cap, she took the stage with an enthusiastic, “Alright, let’s get this party started, let’s go!” The response, however, was notably muted, with only a few scattered cheers.

Undeterred, Hochul persisted, calling out, “Buffalo, let’s go!” and gesturing to different sections of the audience in an effort to spark a call-and-response. The crowd remained largely unresponsive.

A Plea for Enthusiasm

Appearing somewhat frustrated by the quiet reception, Governor Hochul directly addressed the attendees. “Alright, seriously? You want to win a championship season with that kind of enthusiasm? Men and women of labor, you know what I’m talking about,” she stated, before making another attempt to lead a chant, which again met with silence.

Reflecting on the new $2.1 billion facility, Hochul then remarked, “We gotta give this place some good karma, right?”

A Look at the New Venue

The Bills are scheduled to commence training camp at the 60,000-seat venue with a “Return of the Blue & Red” practice on August 8th. According to Bills Senior Vice President of Design and Stadium Operations Frank Cravotta, the stadium is nearing completion, standing at 99.75% finished.

The stadium, designed by architects Populous, features advanced amenities to combat the harsh Buffalo winters. These include underground heating coils for the natural grass field, specialized lighting to aid grass growth, a snow-melt system, and a protective canopy designed to shield fans from wind and enhance comfort.
