Ocean City Ride Malfunction Leaves Teens Dangling Upside Down
An evening of fun at the Jersey Shore turned terrifying for a group of teenagers when a ride at Playland’s Castaway Cove malfunctioned, leaving them suspended upside down for several minutes. Among those caught in the unsettling incident were 13-year-old friends Charlotte Hacker and Emilia Gordon, who recounted their harrowing experience to Fox News Digital. The ride, known as the Wipe Out, experienced an unexpected stop shortly after the Fourth of July holiday, trapping more than a dozen passengers in a precarious position.
A Birthday Celebration Gone Awry
The ill-fated outing was meant to be a pre-birthday celebration for Emilia Gordon, whose 13th birthday was the following day. She and Charlotte, along with other family members, headed to the Ocean City boardwalk, a familiar haunt for them. Drawn to the Wipe Out ride, which they noted was new to the park, they eagerly boarded, anticipating the thrill of its pendulum-like motion and spinning passenger compartments that typically invert riders.
However, on this particular evening, the ride’s usual cycle was abruptly interrupted. Instead of the expected back-and-forth, the Wipe Out came to a standstill, leaving everyone on board hanging upside down. For Charlotte and Emilia, the brief period of being stuck felt like an eternity.
The Agony of Being Stuck
“We were stuck upside down for five to seven minutes, and it doesn’t seem like that much to the people that were down watching us, but we were up there, and it felt like an hour,” Charlotte shared. The physical sensation of being inverted, with blood rushing to their heads, was deeply unsettling.
Emilia described the intense feeling of helplessness. “I seriously thought I was going to pass out,” she recalled. “You try to put your head up, but you literally can’t. You can barely get it up at all.” To cope with the mounting anxiety and physical discomfort, the two friends attempted to engage in casual conversation, a stark contrast to their upside-down reality.
The fear wasn’t limited to the riders. Family members watching from below were also gripped by panic. “My uncle was there too, because we were all with my cousins, so he was also freaking out,” Charlotte added, highlighting the shared distress of the situation.
Adding to the psychological torment, Emilia confessed to a primal fear that the safety restraints might fail. “I remember thinking that the lap bars were going to open and that we were just going to fall,” she said, a thought that likely crossed the minds of other passengers as well.
Resolution and Lingering Discontent
After what felt like an interminable wait, the ride operators managed to restart the mechanism. However, the relief was short-lived. To the girls’ dismay, the ride continued its cycle, and they were kept on board for several more minutes even after the inversion sequence concluded, before finally being allowed to disembark.
The cause of the malfunction remains unclear, and reports of any injuries have not been made public. Remarkably, the ride reportedly did not close following the incident. Charlotte mentioned that some individuals even continued to queue and ride the Wipe Out after their own harrowing experience.
The park did offer refunds in the form of tickets to those affected. However, the compensation felt inadequate to Charlotte and Emilia, given the frightening ordeal they endured. “When we came off, people were literally clapping,” Emilia noted, perhaps in relief that the ride was operational again, or perhaps in a strange acknowledgment of the spectacle. “That ride is five tickets, so they just gave back our ticket but [Hacker] only got three back. I got five. But still, after all that, I feel like you expect more,” Emilia expressed, reflecting a sentiment likely shared by others who experienced the malfunction.
Attempts to reach the Ocean City Fire Department, the Ocean City Police Department, the ride’s operator, and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs for comment were made by Fox News Digital.
