Oregon Ducks Poised to Challenge Big Ten Elite?
The Big Ten Conference has firmly established itself as a powerhouse in college football, with the 2025-2026 season showcasing its dominance. Following championship victories by Michigan in 2024 and Ohio State in 2025, the Indiana Hoosiers capped off a phenomenal 16-0 season with a national title. Their remarkable run included a conference championship win over Ohio State, a dominant performance against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, and a decisive victory over Oregon in the College Football Playoff semifinal. While the SEC may boast greater depth across its ranks, the pinnacle of the Big Ten now rivals or surpasses any other conference.
Oregon Ducks: A Rising Contender
Amidst this Big Ten ascendancy, a new challenger appears ready to vie for the conference’s top spot: the Oregon Ducks. A key indicator of a team’s potential success in the subsequent season is the amount of returning production from the previous year. Retaining core players fosters continuity and development, often translating to stronger performance.
According to analysis by ESPN’s Bill Connelly, several Big Ten teams are well-positioned due to significant returning value on both offense and defense. Teams such as Maryland, Nebraska, Minnesota, and UCLA are noted among the nation’s top 10 in this regard. However, the Oregon Ducks stand out, ranking 12th nationally in returning production, a remarkable feat for a team that only suffered two losses during the 2025 season – both at the hands of the eventual national champions, Indiana.
Oregon’s Impressive 2025 Campaign
Oregon’s path through the 2025 season was marked by significant victories. They convincingly defeated USC with a score of 42-27, battled through challenging conditions to edge out the Iowa Hawkeyes on the road, secured a win against their rivals, the Washington Huskies, and delivered a stunning defensive performance by shutting out Texas Tech 23-0 in the College Football Playoff. The Ducks are set to bring back 66% of their overall production from that successful season, including their star quarterback, Dante Moore.
USC and Other Big Ten Teams
Following closely behind Oregon in returning production is USC, with 65% of their players back for a pivotal season under coach Lincoln Riley. However, Oregon holds a distinct advantage, having achieved greater success with its returning core in the previous season compared to USC. This difference is reflected in Connelly’s SP+ projections, which forecast Oregon as the No. 2 team in the country, excelling in offensive, defensive, and special teams efficiency.
USC, projected at No. 13 nationally, presents an intriguing wildcard. The Trojans boast an elite offense and a defense expected to be solid, but their special teams are ranked a concerning 100th nationally, largely due to several costly mistakes in 2025. If USC can address these special teams issues, which are often the most straightforward to improve, they could potentially surpass their projected eight-win season.
Indiana and Ohio State Face New Challenges
The recent champions, Ohio State and Indiana, face a more challenging road ahead, though their situations are far from dire. The Buckeyes are set to return 60% of their production, while Indiana retains 56%, despite several key departures. These figures place them at No. 31 and No. 52 nationally, respectively, which is respectable but may not be enough to maintain their absolute top-tier status in national projections.
Ohio State, currently ranked No. 1 in national projections, benefits from consistent elite recruiting and the return of key players like Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith. However, if a significant upset is to occur at the top of the Big Ten, Oregon appears to be the most likely candidate to stage it.
Oregon’s Difficult Path Ahead
The ultimate question for Oregon is whether they can translate their returning talent and strong projections into success against a demanding schedule. Their upcoming slate includes road games against USC and Ohio State, a home game against Nebraska, a trip to Illinois, a home matchup with Michigan, and their rivalry game against Washington at Autzen Stadium.
It will undoubtedly be a challenging season for the Ducks. Yet, if they can navigate this gauntlet, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Dan Lanning and his Oregon team firmly in contention for the Big Ten title once again.
