Penn State Cocaine Ring Disrupted; 14 Charged in Fraternity Drug Operation

Authorities have dismantled a significant cocaine distribution network allegedly operating within the Penn State University community, leading to the arrest of 14 individuals. The operation, which investigators say involved students and two off-campus fraternities, was described by Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday as a “coordinated and highly-profitable drug-trafficking crew.”

Alleged Drug Ring Uncovered

The charges, stemming from conduct alleged to have occurred in 2023 and 2024, target individuals accused of playing various roles in the alleged cocaine trafficking scheme. According to the Attorney General’s office, 13 of the defendants are or were Penn State students at the time of the alleged offenses. The 14th individual, identified as the father of a student, faces charges for tampering with evidence and hindering the investigation.

At the heart of the operation, investigators identified Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson as the primary suppliers. They are accused of making frequent trips to Philadelphia and New York to procure substantial quantities of cocaine. The alleged distribution network extended to members of the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities, who are accused of processing and packaging the drugs within their off-campus fraternity houses before distributing them to fellow students.

Fraternity Involvement and Indoctrination Allegations

Beyond the alleged ringleaders, several other individuals face serious felony charges. Mohammed Hurabi and Lars Zeepvat are charged with corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and dealing in the proceeds of unlawful activity, among other offenses. Robert Zanolla is facing charges for conspiracy and the criminal use of a communication facility, along with related misdemeanors.

The Attorney General’s office further detailed that eight other individuals, described as “student-aged defendants,” are facing misdemeanor charges for drug possession and possession of paraphernalia. These individuals include Liam Smith, Michael Brogno, Kaden Howe, Connor Hurleigh, Seth Beardsley, Kyle Ridpath, Daniel Price, and Charles Wiseman. Officials confirmed that at least four of the men charged are currently enrolled students at Penn State.

Attorney General Sunday highlighted a particularly disturbing aspect of the alleged operation: “In fact, according to the evidence uncovered, cutting and packaging cocaine was, for some pledges, an indoctrination into the fraternities.” This suggests that involvement in the drug ring was allegedly used as a means of integrating new members into the fraternity structure.

Obstruction and University Response

Adding another layer to the investigation, Thomas Robinson’s father, Paul Robinson, is charged with felony tampering and hindering apprehension. He is accused of taking actions to conceal evidence and obstruct the law enforcement investigation.

Penn State University has acknowledged the allegations and taken immediate action. The Delta Upsilon fraternity chapter has been placed on interim suspension pending the outcome of the university’s internal investigation. Regarding the Sigma Chi fraternity, the university noted that it is not a recognized organization and operates independently of university oversight.

Andrea Dowhower, vice president for Student Affairs at Penn State, expressed the university’s dismay. “We are horrified by these serious allegations against current and former students,” Dowhower stated. “Criminal activity, including hazing, such as this has no place at our institution, and we will cooperate with law enforcement in any way we can. We will continue to enhance our efforts around health and safety and hazing educational efforts for all our organizations.”

Fraternity Organizations React

The Delta Upsilon International Fraternity, through its Executive Director Justin Kirk, issued a statement acknowledging awareness of the alleged incidents. “The charges filed today [Monday] stem from alleged incidents that Delta Upsilon International Fraternity was previously made aware of,” Kirk said. “The individuals associated with Delta Upsilon have either been expelled, suspended or resigned. We will continue to work closely with the university on any investigative efforts.”

Efforts to reach the national Sigma Chi fraternity for comment were ongoing.

This extensive investigation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by universities and law enforcement in combating drug trafficking and maintaining safe campus environments. The involvement of fraternities, particularly the alleged use of drug-related activities as a form of initiation, points to complex issues within student organizations that require continued scrutiny and intervention.
