Pulisic’s Status Uncertain Ahead of USMNT’s Crucial Australia Match

As the United States men’s national soccer team prepares to face Australia on Friday, fresh off a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, a significant question mark hangs over the squad: the availability of Christian Pulisic. The star player’s injury status has been a persistent concern for the team, even as they’ve started their home campaign strongly.

Pulisic’s Calf Injury Clouds Pre-Match Outlook

Pulisic, who contributed an assist in the win against Paraguay, was sidelined in the second half of last week’s match due to a calf injury. When pressed about the condition of the American captain’s left calf ahead of the upcoming game at Lumen Field in Seattle, USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino offered a measured update.

“He’s evolving,” Pochettino stated. “He’s much better from Friday. We’ll see. I think at the moment, we think if he’s not available for tomorrow, he’ll be available for the next game.”

Pochettino acknowledged the considerable effort Pulisic is expending to be match-fit, recognizing the player’s strong desire to compete alongside his teammates. A decision on his availability is expected after further evaluation with the training staff on Thursday night.

A Player’s Dedication

“I think for every player that loves his country, it’s an amazing opportunity to enjoy and help the team win games,” Pochettino commented. “When this type of thing happens, always it’s painful, but I think Christian is strong, with a great mentality, and doing a fantastic effort to try to be ready.”

During the team’s practice session on Thursday, Pulisic was observed engaging in modified training, separate from the main group during the media-open portion, consistent with his activities earlier in the week.

Contingency Plans for Pulisic’s Absence

Pochettino remained non-committal regarding who would step in should Pulisic be unable to play. He indicated that an announcement would be made on Friday. However, it was noted that Malik Tillman occupied the left wing position after Pulisic’s substitution against Paraguay, with Sebastian Berhalter moving into midfield in the latter stages of that game.

“I will tell tomorrow if that is the situation,” Pochettino said. “At the moment, we are evaluating all the possibilities just in case. And then we will decide when we have the confirmation in one or another direction tonight.”

Team’s Perspective on Pulisic’s Importance

There is little doubt that Pulisic’s presence on the field would significantly enhance the Americans’ prospects against Australia. Teammate Weston McKennie offered insight into the team’s mindset regarding their star player.

“Either way, just trying to give good spirits and hopefully he can be there tomorrow,” McKennie remarked. “I know he really wants to be, and he’s doing everything that he can, and the staff is doing everything that they can as well. But that’s also another question that’s better to ask him rather than me. I’m in my own la-la land.”

With Australia having secured a victory against Türkiye in their opening World Cup fixture, this upcoming match holds significant weight, as the winner will claim sole possession of first place in Group D.
