Rep. Marcy Kaptur Shares Recovery Update After Toledo Hit-and-Run

U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur, a Democrat representing Ohio, has released a video message detailing her recovery following a car accident in Toledo earlier this month. The congresswoman, who was involved in what authorities described as a “hit-skip” incident, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support she has received and stated that both she and her staff member who was present are recovering well.

Kaptur Addresses Supporters in Video Update

In the video, shared on the social media platform X, Representative Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in the House of Representatives, appeared seated, seemingly in a wheelchair, in front of an office window. She conveyed her sincere thanks to the thousands of individuals who have sent well-wishes from her community, across Ohio, and even internationally. “It’s made a huge difference in my very rapid recovery,” Kaptur stated in the video. “Each of you continue to uplift my spirit as we move forward. Thank you!”

The 80-year-old congresswoman, who has served in the House since 1983, was traveling with her staffer, Keegan Zimmerman, to a church service when their vehicle was struck. The incident occurred near the intersection of Detroit and Central avenues in Toledo. Ohio law defines a “hit-skip” as a driver’s failure to stop after being involved in a collision.

“Dear friends, first of all, thank you so very, very much for the thousands of good wishes that are coming from our community, across our region, our state, our country, and even around the world,” Kaptur said in the video. “Really, it’s made a huge difference in my very rapid recovery.”

She specifically acknowledged her staffer, Keegan Zimmerman, who was with her during the incident. “I want to thank all of you on behalf of myself, my beautiful staff, including Keegan Zimmerman who was with me on that fateful day on Sunday a week ago,” Kaptur continued. “He also is in good shape. And I’m working my way back and am so grateful for all of the help that has been given to me in this effort.”

Recovery Amidst Congressional Recess

The timing of the accident coincides with the House of Representatives’ August recess, providing Representative Kaptur with additional time to recuperate before returning to Washington, D.C. “We will not return to Washington until next month, so I’m blessed to have time to recover fully,” she noted in the video. She also extended her appreciation to the first responders, including fire and rescue squads, police, and medical personnel, who assisted at the scene.

“I want to thank the first responders, the fire and rescue squads, the police, and all of medical personnel that served us at such a fateful moment,” Kaptur added.

Political Context and Campaign Update

Representative Kaptur is currently seeking re-election in November. She faces a rematch against former Ohio State Representative Derek Merrin, whom she narrowly defeated in the 2024 election. The race is anticipated to be a significant contest in Ohio, a state often considered a bellwether in national elections. In her previous election, Kaptur won by a slim margin, just over half a percent, which narrowly avoided triggering an automatic recount, with a Libertarian candidate securing approximately 4% of the vote.

However, she emphasized her gratitude for the medical professionals who treated her. “Let me tell you we have to be very grateful in this region to have the kind of dedicated medical staff that exists at Mercy St. Vincent’s treating patients from across this region, many of whom are underserved,” she stated.

She lauded the medical team’s commitment, saying, “Absolute dedication to saving lives. I was just so impressed.”

A Child’s Get-Well Card Brightens the Day

Concluding her video message, Representative Kaptur shared a handmade get-well card she received from a young supporter named Avery. The card featured a drawing of Avery’s dog, Charlie, whom Kaptur affectionately described as “half-human.”

“We’ve heard from many people of many ages, and I received this card from a young gentleman named Avery,” she explained, holding up the card. “Isn’t this sweet? That’s his dog, Charlie. And he and I happen to be friends. And he was worried about me. So he did this card for me.”

Kaptur read the message from the card, which said, “‘Get well soon’ – with Charlie, with hearts, because I really love this dog, Charlie. He’s half-human. And signed Melanie, Adam, Eli, and Avery.” She reiterated the positive impact of such gestures, stating, “These are wonderful people, and they uplift your spirits, and each of you uplift my spirit as we move forward.”
