Suspect’s Beach Chase Ends in Takedown on San Diego Shore
A man accused of a reckless driving spree that led San Diego police on an erratic pursuit was ultimately apprehended on a popular beach Sunday morning, much to the surprise of early-morning beachgoers. The chaotic incident, which began just before 7:30 a.m., unfolded after the San Diego Police Department received numerous calls from concerned citizens reporting a driver exhibiting dangerous behavior in the Pacific Beach area.
Erratic Driving Sparks Pursuit
Witnesses described the driver of a tan or gold Nissan Frontier performing “donuts” in parking lots, narrowly avoiding other vehicles, and reportedly striking curbs and a retaining wall. Officers quickly responded to the vicinity and observed the truck heading westbound towards the ocean. When an officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver allegedly fled, initiating a police pursuit.
Authorities initially decided to terminate the chase due to the driver’s “increasing wanton disregard to public safety,” according to police statements. However, the situation escalated again when officers later located the truck. The driver allegedly failed to yield a second time, prompting another pursuit that was also called off by law enforcement for safety reasons.
By this point, the Nissan was considered a vehicle involved in felony evading, prompting officers to increase their presence and search efforts throughout the area to relocate the truck.
Helicopter Tracks Suspect to the Beach
Law enforcement eventually spotted the Nissan again, moving slowly. Instead of initiating another immediate stop, officers opted to wait for the department’s Airborne Law Enforcement (ABLE) helicopter to arrive and provide aerial tracking. The helicopter maintained visual on the Nissan as it made its way onto the beach and proceeded towards the water’s edge.
Video footage captured from the scene shows a crowd of beach visitors observing as police vehicles converged on the pickup truck stranded on the sand. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Griffin Charles Foy, was seen exiting the vehicle with his hands raised as officers approached to detain him. While a police K-9 was present, it was not deployed during the arrest.
Arrest and Charges
Police conducted a high-risk vehicle stop, citing the alleged violations and Foy’s apparent disregard for public safety. Foy was taken into custody without further incident. He was subsequently booked into the San Diego Central Jail.
The charges filed against Foy include felony evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, obstructing or resisting a peace officer, and driving under the influence of drugs, as confirmed by police reports.
No Injuries Reported
Remarkably, despite the prolonged and unconventional pursuit that traversed city streets and ended on a public beach, authorities reported that no injuries were sustained by any individuals involved or present at the scene.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by impaired driving and reckless behavior on public roadways and recreational areas. Law enforcement’s decision to utilize aerial support and carefully manage the pursuit ultimately led to a safe resolution, preventing potential harm to the public.
