A prominent Democratic Senator has broken ranks with his party, expressing concern over the Justice Department’s actions in obtaining text messages from members of Congress as part of investigations led by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut stated that Republican colleagues have valid reasons to be troubled by the department’s alleged spying on lawmakers to support Smith’s probes.
Concerns Over Justice Department Practices
Speaking on Wednesday, Senator Blumenthal indicated that more information is needed and that the matter warrants thorough investigation. “I think we need to have more facts. Look into it,” Blumenthal told Fox News Digital. “Republicans are rightly concerned about the possible breach of norms and improper access to email.”
These remarks come in the wake of the GOP-led Senate Judiciary Committee releasing a significant number of documents on Tuesday. These documents revealed that the Justice Department collected text messages from 44 members of Congress, including both Republicans and Democrats, as well as White House staff. These communications were reportedly relevant to Smith’s investigations into the January 6th Capitol breach and former President Donald Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Mixed Reactions from Democrats
While Senator Blumenthal voiced his concerns, other Democrats appeared less inclined to echo the Republican worries regarding the methods employed by Jack Smith’s office
