A progressive challenger with a history of provocative statements has secured the Democratic nomination in New York’s 13th Congressional District, defeating a long-serving incumbent. Darializa Avila Chevalier, 32, a community organizer, emerged victorious in a closely watched primary race.

Challenger’s Past Remarks Draw Scrutiny

Avila Chevalier, who studied at Columbia University, has drawn attention for past remarks and affiliations. Documents and reports indicate she was involved with a group that posted controversial messages online. Her platform, which advocates for significant policy shifts, has also faced examination. These include stances on private property, law enforcement, and border security, as well as proposals to nationalize key sectors of the economy.

In now-deleted online posts from between 2018 and 2022, Avila Chevalier expressed views such as the abolition of borders, prisons, and police, stating such measures are “possible, necessary, and the only moral way forward.” She also reportedly supported the idea that “all deportation is wrong” and advocated for the literal abolition of borders.

Further statements attributed to Avila Chevalier include strong criticisms of the United States, describing it as “a f—–g disgrace.” She has also reportedly made disparaging remarks about former President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders, and expressed strong disapproval of former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Endorsement Amidst Controversy

Despite the controversies surrounding her past statements, Avila Chevalier received backing from prominent figures, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani, who endorsed Avila Chevalier in May, addressed the candidate’s controversial comments.

“When it comes to Darializa’s campaign, I had not seen those tweets and what I’ve heard from her and what I know a lot of others in the district that have heard from her is that her views have evolved and that the campaign she is running on is reflective of what she’s going to be fighting for,” Mamdani stated when questioned about the candidate’s remarks. He also highlighted Avila Chevalier’s record on issues such as advocating for individuals detained by immigration authorities and supporting working people, particularly in a district facing concerns about displacement.

District Overview and General Election Outlook

New York’s 13th Congressional District, which includes parts of Upper Manhattan and the West Bronx, has historically elected Democratic representatives. With her primary victory, Avila Chevalier is now poised to compete in the general election. The district has not elected a Republican representative in the past.

During a recent debate with incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat, Avila Chevalier reiterated her stance on immigration, asserting that individuals who have committed crimes should not be deported, even if they have served time. She has also faced criticism for remarks concerning interracial relationships.
