Primary elections across the United States on Tuesday delivered a mixed bag of results, showcasing shifts within the Republican party and the growing influence of progressive movements. Voters in several states, including Florida, Arizona, and Alaska, cast ballots that will shape the upcoming general elections, with particular attention paid to the performance of candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump and the surprising success of a socialist candidate in Florida.

Florida Socialist Scores Stunning Senate Upset

In a significant upset that defied expectations and campaign finance norms, Democratic state Representative Angie Nixon secured a decisive victory in Florida’s Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate. Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), triumphed over retired Air Force Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a figure prominent in the impeachment proceedings against Trump. Despite Vindman’s substantial financial advantage, reportedly outspending Nixon by a nine-to-one margin with a war chest of over $16 million compared to her approximately $1 million, Nixon clinched the win by nearly 12 percentage points. This victory positions Nixon to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the general election, marking a notable moment for the burgeoning socialist movement in a key battleground state.

Trump’s Endorsements Face a Varied Test

The primary night presented a complex picture for former President Trump’s influence within the Republican party. While some of his chosen candidates achieved victory, others faltered, indicating a nuanced reception to his endorsements.

Florida’s Gubernatorial Race

In Florida, Trump-endorsed Representative Byron Donalds won the Republican gubernatorial primary, securing 47% of the vote against Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins (25%) and businessman James Fishback (10.5%). Donalds will now face former Republican Congressman David Jolly, who won the Democratic nomination for the governor’s race. Elsewhere in Florida, incumbent Republican Congressman Randy Fine, also backed by Trump, easily won his reelection bid in the 6th Congressional District. However, the night wasn’t entirely smooth for Trump’s picks. Incumbent Representative Cory Mills, representing Florida’s 7th Congressional District, lost his reelection bid to challenger Ryan Elijah, a former television anchor. Mills, who had received Trump’s endorsement, faced a significant House Ethics Committee investigation concerning alleged campaign finance violations, assault allegations, and improper gifts, all of which he denies. The 7th District, which leans Republican, now appears to favor Elijah in the general election.

Catalina Lauf, who received a late endorsement from Trump, did not fare as well in her bid for Florida’s 19th Congressional District. She came in second with 22% of the vote, behind media executive Jim Schwartzel, who garnered 29.1%. This race also featured familiar faces, including businessman Jim Oberweis and former Representative Madison Cawthorn, who had previously lost his North Carolina seat amid scandal.

Wyoming’s Republican Primaries

Wyoming presented a similar dichotomy. Trump-endorsed Representative Harriet Hageman, the state’s at-large congresswoman, won her U.S. Senate primary race decisively, capturing 62% of the vote against cattle rancher Sam Mead. However, in the gubernatorial primary, Republican voters opted against Trump’s preferred candidate, electing state Senator Eric Barlow over Megan Degenfelder, the state’s superintendent of public instruction. Barlow secured a comfortable win with 50% of the vote compared to Degenfelder’s 29.7%.

Wyoming’s Secretary of State, Chuck Gray, won a competitive five-way primary for the state’s lone House seat, securing 25% of the vote. Gray, a Trump-aligned conservative, is expected to maintain the state’s Republican leanings in the general election.

Alaska’s Senate Race

In Alaska, the political landscape is also evolving. Incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan secured a spot in the general election after finishing second in the state’s non-partisan primary. He will face former Democratic Congresswoman Mary Peltola, who led the voting, along with three other candidates. Alaska employs a ranked-choice voting system for its general elections.

Democrats Navigate Internal Divisions

While Republicans grappled with the impact of Trump’s endorsements, Democrats in Florida faced their own internal dynamics, particularly concerning the balance between moderate and progressive wings of the party.

Florida House Races

In Florida’s 20th Congressional District, incumbent Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz defeated a field of challengers, including self-proclaimed socialist activist Elijah Manley, who had raised nearly $1 million. Manley’s campaign raised questions about Wasserman Schultz’s residency and the representation of historically Black districts. Wasserman Schultz, who is expected to have a significant advantage in the heavily Democratic district, emphasized her independent approach in Congress.

Meanwhile, Representative Jared Moskowitz decisively won the Democratic primary in Florida’s 25th Congressional District, defeating DSA member Oliver Larkin by a 64%-36% margin. Moskowitz, running as a centrist, criticized Larkin’s progressive platform, which included calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and pack the Supreme Court. Moskowitz framed his victory as a win for independent-minded Democrats, despite facing a district that has become more Republican-leaning after redistricting.

Looking Ahead

The primary results offer a preview of the electoral battles to come. The success of Angie Nixon in Florida signals a potential shift in the Democratic party’s landscape, while the varied outcomes for Trump-endorsed candidates suggest that his influence, though significant, is not absolute. As the nation moves toward the general elections, these primaries have set the stage for critical contests that will determine the balance of power in Congress and statehouses across the country.
