Suspected Highway Shooter’s Body Found in Burned Home

A body believed to be that of Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, the 22-year-old man sought in connection with a series of highway shootings near Kansas City’s World Cup venues, has been discovered by his family. The remains were found in the basement of a house that had previously caught fire.

Discovery in Devastated Residence

Authorities were alerted around 2 p.m. local time on Wednesday when the family, visiting the property, reported finding decomposing remains. According to officials, the family had been to the home on several occasions since the fire but only located the body after clearing away debris and noticing a distinct odor.

The discovery appears to mark a conclusion to an extensive multi-agency manhunt that commenced after Sanchez-Munoz allegedly opened fire on vehicles along Interstate 70, a route close to Arrowhead Stadium, a venue for FIFA World Cup matches.

Challenging Search Conditions

Prior to the family’s discovery, investigators, federal partners, and K-9 units had conducted multiple searches of the Independence, Missouri, property without success. Reports indicate that the basement had partially collapsed, was flooded, and contained a significant amount of “clutter,” making the search exceptionally difficult.

The shooting spree, involving approximately half a dozen incidents, resulted in one fatality and several serious injuries. Among those injured was an Uber driver transporting soccer fans at the time of the attack.

Manhunt and Public Warning

During the intense search for Sanchez-Munoz, federal authorities had offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to his apprehension, issuing a public warning that he was considered “armed and dangerous.” There had been speculation from officials that the suspect might have perished within the Missouri residence, though confirmation was not possible at the time.

Preliminary Identification and Next Steps

Investigators are proceeding under the presumption that the deceased individual is Sanchez-Munoz. Preliminary observations, including clothing found on the body matching that worn during the recent attacks, support this assumption. A medical examiner is scheduled to conduct a formal identification and determine the official cause of death.

Officials have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community. They also stated that all surviving victims are expected to make a full recovery.
