Seventeen-year-old Miles Russell, the youngest competitor in this year’s U.S. Open, delivered a truly remarkable Father’s Day gesture during the final round at Shinnecock Hills. Russell, who had already achieved the significant milestone of making the cut in his major championship debut, orchestrated a surprise that resonated deeply with his family and captivated golf enthusiasts worldwide.

A Special Role for Dad on the 18th Hole

As Russell approached the par-4 18th hole for his final tee shot, his caddie stepped aside. In a poignant turn of events, the caddie removed his bib and handed it, along with Russell’s golf bag, to his father, Joe. This unexpected handover marked a deeply personal moment, allowing Russell’s father to briefly step into the caddie role for the closing hole of a major championship.

Russell’s Idea, Approved by Officials

Reports indicate that the heartwarming gesture was Russell’s own initiative. Before commencing his final round on Sunday, he reportedly sought and received approval from U.S. Golf Association (USGA) rules officials to have his father take over caddying duties for the 18th hole. This thoughtful planning ensured the moment was not only special but also adhered to tournament regulations.

A Memorable Father’s Day Gift

Reflecting on the experience after the round, Russell shared his feelings about the unique Father’s Day present. “It was pretty cool,” he stated. “Just there walking up 18, that’s when he stepped in. It was kind of a fun Father’s Day gift. Kind of cool since it was my first one. Hopefully it’s something he’ll remember for a long time.””

Russell’s Performance and Path to the Open

Russell navigated the challenging conditions of the U.S. Open, making the cut by two strokes after shooting 3-over par through the opening two rounds. He posted a 74 in the third round before concluding with an even-par score in the final round.

His journey to this year’s U.S. Open included a dramatic playoff for one of the final qualifying spots. Notably, Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie Woods, served as Russell’s caddie during that qualifying event. Both young golfers have committed to playing college golf at Florida State University. Russell also made history in 2024 by becoming the youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour, ultimately finishing tied for 20th.
