A 16-year-old California lifeguard has shared the harrowing details of a dramatic ocean rescue that captured national attention. Ryder Williams, stationed at Santa Cruz Beach, described the moments he saved a 10-year-old boy who had become unresponsive in the powerful surf. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was captured on video and has since gone viral, showcasing the bravery of the young rescuer.
A Routine Check Turns Critical
Williams recounted the event in a statement released by California State Parks, his employer. He was performing routine safety checks near Tower 2 when he noticed a child near the water’s edge lose his footing. “I looked up and saw a child about 20 yards up from the tower lose his footing in ankle deep water,” Williams stated. Immediately recognizing the danger, he radioed for backup, dropped his personal belongings, and sprinted towards the struggling child.
Donning his fins as he ran, Williams entered the turbulent water. The conditions made it difficult to maneuver and get a secure hold on the boy. “Due to the volatility of the water, I was unable to tube up the victim,” he explained. After the first significant wave hit, Williams found himself unable to pull the boy back to shore. The child had gone limp, and the strong currents were working against him.
Teamwork and Bystander Intervention
The situation escalated quickly with subsequent waves crashing over them. Fortunately, fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen entered the water to assist. Several bystanders also attempted to help, but Williams directed them to return to shore to avoid further risk.
“Once Bohnen and I got the kid to shore I was instructed to get the med bag from Bohnen’s unit and we assessed the child,” Williams described. Despite the intensity of the rescue, he returned to his post shortly after to continue his shift, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to his duty.
Gratitude and Dedication
Williams expressed profound gratitude for the outcome. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely,” he said. He emphasized that this is his profession and that he genuinely loves his work. “This is my job and I love what I do. I’m thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day,” he added, acknowledging the tireless efforts of his colleagues.
