A disturbing incident unfolded in Johnson City, Tennessee, this week when a mother was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect after allegedly attempting to drown one of her children in a backyard swimming pool. The event, which took place on July 15, led to the apprehension of Mikaylee Rae Beirne, 31.

Incident Details Emerge

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a disturbance at a residence on Cochran Road around 5 p.m. Sheriff Keith Sexton stated that deputies were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they were met with accounts from witnesses describing Beirne being in the backyard pool with several children. Concurrently, another adult was reportedly inside the home.

According to the unfolding investigation, the situation escalated when one of the children present ran inside the house. This child urgently alerted the adult inside, relaying that Beirne was allegedly holding another child underwater. The adult immediately exited the home and proceeded to the pool area, demanding that Beirne release the child. Authorities reported that Beirne refused this demand.

Intervention and Aftermath

Faced with Beirne’s refusal, the adult intervened directly, pulling Beirne away from the child and then assisting the child out of the pool. Officials noted that a second adult arrived at the property and had a brief interaction with Beirne before law enforcement personnel arrived. Beirne reportedly left the scene prior to the deputies’ arrival.

Following the immediate crisis, the children were brought inside the home. Emergency medical services were summoned to the scene. The child who was allegedly held underwater sustained minor injuries, including bruising, according to official reports. Deputies managed to locate Beirne a short time after the initial response and took her into custody.

Legal Proceedings and Bail

Mikaylee Rae Beirne is currently being held at the Washington County Detention Center. She faces charges of aggravated child abuse and neglect. Her bond has been set at $50,000.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempted drowning is ongoing. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to gather information and interview relevant parties to establish a full account of the events that transpired on July 15.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of child safety and the swift response required in situations involving potential harm to minors. The sheriff’s office emphasized its commitment to protecting children and ensuring the safety of the community.
