A prominent progressive Democrat, Troy Jackson, has filed paperwork to potentially enter the U.S. Senate race in Maine, a move that could see him replace Graham Platner on the ballot. Platner is currently facing significant pressure to withdraw from the campaign following allegations of rape that surfaced earlier this week. The situation has drawn national attention, with key Democratic figures urging Platner to step aside.
Platner Faces Allegations, Democratic Support Wanes
The controversy surrounding Graham Platner intensified on Monday with the emergence of serious allegations. In response, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and other leading Democrats have publicly rescinded their support for Platner and called for his immediate withdrawal from the Senate campaign. Despite these calls, Platner has vehemently denied the accusations, labeling them as “categorically false,” and has thus far remained in the race.
Under Maine’s election laws, Platner has a critical deadline approaching. He must officially withdraw from the race by Monday, July 13, 2026, if the Democratic Party intends to nominate a replacement for the November ballot. Should Platner decide to step aside before this deadline, the state Democratic Party will then have until July 27, 2026, to select a new candidate to fill the vacancy.
Jackson Signals Senate Ambitions
Troy Jackson, who recently competed in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, has taken a significant step by filing a Statement of Candidacy with the Federal Election Commission. This action clearly signals his interest in a potential U.S. Senate bid should the opportunity arise. Following this filing, Jackson addressed the situation on social media, condemning the allegations against Platner while carefully noting that he has not yet committed to seeking the nomination.
“While I haven’t made any final decisions yet, I’m deeply humbled by the outpouring of support and encouragement I’ve received,” Jackson stated in his social media post. “I’m currently weighing the best path forward to support our progressive movement and the working class political revolution Mainers are fighting for.”
A History of Progressive Alignment
Jackson and Platner have a history of working together, having run closely aligned progressive campaigns and appeared jointly at various campaign events throughout the 2026 election cycle. Both candidates championed a progressive platform and notably secured the endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
Following the allegations against Platner, Our Revolution, the progressive organization founded by Senator Sanders, took swift action. The group withdrew its endorsement of Platner and instead declared its support for Jackson, whom it had also backed during his gubernatorial campaign. Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director of Our Revolution, emphasized the urgency of the situation.
“We have days, not weeks, to make sure a real progressive is on this ballot,” Geevarghese said in a statement. “If we do not organize now, we risk watching the Democratic establishment handing Maine a corporate placeholder while the party that just got outvoted decides it knows better. We refuse to let that happen.”
Jackson’s Deep Ties to the Progressive Movement
Troy Jackson’s connections to Bernie Sanders run deep, extending back over a decade. He was among a select group of Democratic National Committee superdelegates who endorsed Sanders during the 2016 presidential primary, choosing him over Hillary Clinton. Jackson later served as Sanders’ political director in Maine, introducing the senator at numerous campaign rallies across the state. Senator Sanders has reciprocated this loyalty, endorsing Jackson’s gubernatorial campaign and campaigning alongside him.
During a past campaign rally, Senator Sanders spoke highly of Jackson’s commitment to working people. “Fighting for the working class of Maine is not something new for Troy,” Sanders stated. “That’s what he has done for his entire life as a logger and as a member of the Maine state legislature. Troy knows what’s going on with the working class of Maine because he is part of that working class.”
A Career Rooted in Maine and Labor
A fifth-generation logger and a well-recognized figure among Maine Democrats, Jackson boasts a long career in public service. He served more than two decades in the Maine State Legislature, including a six-year tenure as President of the Maine Senate, a position he left in 2024. His platform during his gubernatorial campaign included ambitious proposals such as universal child care, Medicare for All, and the establishment of a Department of Affordable Housing. His reputation as a champion for the working class was further solidified by endorsements from over 20 labor unions.
Remarkably, Jackson has demonstrated an ability to win elections in areas that lean Republican. He previously represented northern Aroostook County, a predominantly rural district that has consistently given President Donald Trump substantial majorities in recent presidential elections. Jackson attributes his electoral success to a focus on economic issues affecting the working class, rather than strict adherence to partisan labels.
The Path Forward
As the July 13th deadline looms, the political landscape in Maine’s Senate race remains fluid. The state Democratic Party faces a critical decision if Platner withdraws, with Troy Jackson now positioned as a potential successor, backed by a significant progressive movement and a history of appealing to working-class voters across party lines.
