Troy Jackson: Maine Democrats’ New Senate Hopeful

Troy Jackson, a former Maine Senate President, is now positioned to become the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, stepping in after Graham Platner withdrew from the race. Jackson is expected to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in a closely watched midterm election that could influence control of the Senate. The path to nomination became significantly clearer for Jackson over the weekend as delegates aligned with him secured a substantial majority of the 500 available slots during county conventions. These delegates will convene next weekend at the state Democratic Party’s nominating convention in Bangor, where Jackson is widely anticipated to clinch the official nomination.

A Look at Troy Jackson’s Political Journey

At 58 years old, Jackson hails from Allagash, a remote town in northern Maine, and comes from a family of loggers stretching back five generations. His political career, which began nearly three decades ago, has seen a notable evolution in party affiliation and policy stances.

From Republican Roots to Independent and Democrat

Jackson’s initial foray into politics involved protesting the hiring of Canadian loggers over their American counterparts. He first sought elected office in 2000 as a Republican. However, he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives two years later as an independent. By 2004, he had joined the Democratic Party. His legislative career advanced when he was elected to the state Senate in 2008, eventually rising to become Senate President in 2018 when Democrats gained the majority.

Evolving Social Stances

While Jackson now champions abortion rights and same-sex marriage, his voting record from over a decade ago reflects a different perspective. In 2010, he received a perfect score from Maine Right to Life, and in 2009, he voted against legalizing same-sex marriage. Jackson has explained these past positions by referencing his Catholic upbringing in rural Maine. He has stated that his views evolved, particularly regarding reproductive rights, which he now considers a human right and essential healthcare. Despite these shifts, he notes that some, like the Democratic Socialists of America, still view him as quite progressive.

“I voted for those things over 15 years ago,” Jackson remarked in a recent interview. “I’ve always been someone who believed that healthcare is a human right and it became clear to me after some time that abortion, reproductive rights access is a human right. It’s healthcare. People deserve to have that. And when it dawned upon me, I became a real advocate for that.”

Gubernatorial Aspirations and Progressive Endorsements

Jackson also pursued the Democratic nomination for governor earlier this year, aiming to succeed outgoing Gov. Janet Mills. His campaign platform focused on expanding healthcare and childcare access. During his gubernatorial bid, he received an endorsement from Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Jackson ultimately finished third in the ranked-choice voting primary for governor.

A Past Alliance with Platner

Interestingly, Jackson and Platner had a prior political connection. They appeared together at rallies with Senator Sanders during the previous year and in the spring. Furthermore, Platner had endorsed Jackson during his gubernatorial campaign, while Jackson, in turn, had backed Platner’s Senate bid. Platner’s withdrawal from the Senate race came after a report surfaced containing an allegation of rape from a former partner, which Platner denied but led him to step aside.

Policy Parallels and Populist Appeal

Despite the circumstances of Platner’s exit, Jackson shares significant policy ground with him, particularly on progressive and populist issues aimed at working-class voters. Jackson advocates for increased taxes on billionaires, universal healthcare (‘Medicare for All’), and the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He also opposes military aid to Israel, a stance that highlights divisions within the Democratic Party. Jackson has articulated his vision as a movement focused on challenging a system he believes is rigged against working people, advocating for strong unions, higher wages, reproductive freedom, and ensuring that the wealthy and corporations contribute their fair share.

“This movement has always been bigger than one person. It’s about taking on a system rigged against working people, fighting for ‘Medicare for all,’ strong unions, higher wages, reproductive freedom, and an economy where billionaires and corporations finally pay their fair share,” Jackson stated during a recent virtual town hall, addressing supporters of Platner.

Reflecting on Platner’s campaign strengths, Jackson noted, “That’s the thing that I think Graham did the best: talked about fighting against the healthcare industry and the prescription drug industry to make sure that people in this state and this country have affordable, quality healthcare.”

Support from Progressive Leaders and Unions

Jackson’s candidacy has garnered backing from prominent progressive figures and organizations. Representative Ro Khanna of California, a key progressive voice in the House, who had previously supported Platner, quickly shifted his endorsement to Jackson. Additionally, Our Revolution, a political organization founded from Senator Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, has endorsed Jackson. He also benefits from strong support among labor unions in Maine. This broad base of support, including from Platner’s former allies, was instrumental in Jackson’s success in securing a majority of county-selected delegates.

The upcoming election against Senator Collins is anticipated to be a hard-fought and costly campaign, representing one of several key races nationwide that could determine the balance of power in the Senate, which is currently held by Republicans with a 53-47 majority.
