Surveillance footage presented in court offers a minute-by-minute account of the movements of Tyler Robinson, the man accused of fatally shooting Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on the Utah Valley University campus. The video compilation, shown during Robinson’s preliminary hearing, allegedly traces the 23-year-old’s presence on campus on September 10, 2025, from his initial arrival hours before the incident to his actions immediately before and after Kirk was killed atop the Losee Center for Student Success.

Mapping the Accused’s Movements

Utah State Bureau of Investigation Agent David Hull testified that investigators meticulously pieced together the timeline by analyzing campus security cameras. The goal was to establish a clear sequence of events leading up to and following the fatal shot, which prosecutors contend originated from the Losee Center roof. While the video itself does not capture the actual shooting, prosecutors assert it depicts the individual they identify as Robinson accessing the roof, positioning himself at the edge, and departing shortly after the event.

Robinson faces a charge of aggravated murder in Kirk’s death, with prosecutors pursuing the death penalty. He has not yet entered a plea. The preliminary hearing, spanning several days, was intended to determine if sufficient evidence exists to warrant a trial.

First Arrival and Departure

According to investigators, the timeline began around 8:30 a.m. on September 10, 2025, when a vehicle believed to be Robinson’s entered a UVU parking garage. Agent Hull testified that the vehicle’s make and distinctive wheels matched records associated with Robinson. The driver, identified by Hull as Robinson, was observed wearing a red or maroon T-shirt, gray or olive shorts, and Converse shoes before proceeding onto campus.

Hull recounted that the individual then moved toward the amphitheater area, where he interacted with representatives from Turning Point USA. Approximately an hour later, around 9:25 a.m., the same individual returned to the parking garage and departed in the vehicle.

Second Campus Visit and Disappearing Backpack

Just after 10 a.m., Hull testified, Robinson returned to campus on foot. He was reportedly wearing the same attire and carrying a blue backpack. Surveillance tracked him to a Chick-fil-A location within the Sorensen Center, where he purchased and consumed a meal. Following his break, Robinson traversed the campus, crossed Campus Drive, and entered a wooded area. Significantly, he reappeared on campus without the backpack he had been carrying earlier.

“He moves out across Campus Drive into a wooded area on what would be kind of the northeast side of Campus Drive, then returns back onto campus,” Hull explained in court, referencing the video playback. “We noticed at this point that he’s no longer carrying the backpack that he was originally wearing.”

Accessing the Rooftop

Before 11 a.m. on that second visit, Hull stated that Robinson proceeded through the Gunther and computer science buildings. His path eventually led him to a railing that provided access to the roof of the Losee Center. He then reportedly descended via stairs and left the campus shortly before 11 a.m.

Around 12:15 p.m., Hull testified, Robinson returned to UVU for a third time. This time, he was wearing different clothing but the same shoes. A noticeable change in his gait was also observed; he appeared to be walking with a limp or an unusual stride.

Surveillance footage showed Robinson ascending stairs in the parking structure, moving around Campus Drive, and heading south across the front of the Losee Center. Hull stated that the individual then appeared on an exterior staircase leading to the building’s roof. At approximately 12:15 p.m., the figure identified as Robinson “kind of rolls over the railing onto the roof of the building,” according to Hull’s testimony.

The Moments Surrounding the Shooting

By 12:23 p.m., Hull testified, the figure observed on the rooftop ran toward the southwest corner of the Losee Center. The individual then crouched down and crawled to the building’s edge, ultimately lying prone just before the reported shot was fired at 12:23 p.m.

Following the shot, Hull described how the figure stood, moved across the roof toward the northeast corner, and then descended from the roof. He reportedly jumped onto a grassy area and proceeded toward Campus Drive, appearing to carry “some kind of an object” in his hand.

During cross-examination, Hull conceded that an actual firearm was not clearly visible in the video. However, he described the object as appearing long, possibly concealed or in a bag, and suggested that based on his expertise, it could be a firearm. Investigators also noted that the apparent limp or unusual gait was no longer evident after the shooting.

Discovery of a Weapon

Investigators utilized campus video to identify a wooded area they believed might hold evidence. This area was subsequently secured, and Hull confirmed he was later informed that a gun had been discovered there. On redirect examination, Hull testified that a rifle was found in the wooded area where investigators suspected Robinson had entered. He noted that Robinson was observed entering this wooded area on at least two occasions: during his second campus visit and again during the visit when the shooting occurred.

Post-Shooting Vehicle Interaction

In the early morning hours of September 11, 2025, around 12:30 a.m., surveillance video captured a vehicle identified as Robinson’s at the intersection of Campus Drive and 800 South. Hull testified that this vehicle had an interaction with Officer Goforth, a Spanish Fork officer providing security detail at the time. Something about this encounter prompted Officer Goforth to record the vehicle’s license plate information.

When information later surfaced suggesting a similar vehicle might be involved in the incident, Officer Goforth ran the partial plate number. This check revealed the vehicle was registered to Tyler Robinson and his mother, Amber Robinson. Hull stated that Officer Goforth reported that the individual he interacted with was a male whom he believed to be Tyler Robinson.

Legal Proceedings and Family Statements

Earlier in the proceedings, Judge Tony Graf issued sanctions against media members after an exhibit was inadvertently displayed and broadcast. The judge initially stated he did not want to “rush or make snap decisions” and prohibited further exhibits for the remainder of that day, though the final video compilation was later permitted.

The preliminary hearing’s evidence is scheduled for oral arguments on September 1, with a ruling to follow. Kirk’s family has urged the court to expedite the case against Robinson, citing what they describe as “overwhelming evidence” presented during the preliminary hearing. Their attorneys filed a statement emphasizing that “a prompt determination is imperative in the interest of justice,” noting the case approaches the one-year anniversary of Kirk’s death and that Robinson has been in custody for ten months. The filing concluded, “The defendant is entitled to a fair trial, and he must receive one. He is not, however, entitled to cause undue delay in the criminal justice process.”
