A man armed with a firearm was apprehended by U.S. Capitol Police on Monday after he drove his vehicle to a security checkpoint on the Capitol grounds. The incident led to a temporary lockdown of a section of the complex and initiated a thorough investigation into the man’s reasons for approaching the heavily secured area.
Capitol Incident Unfolds
The event began when officers encountered the suspect at the North Barricade. Upon discovering the firearm, police took the individual into custody. The possession of firearms is strictly forbidden on Capitol Grounds, prompting an immediate closure of the vicinity to allow investigators to meticulously examine the scene.
“Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the U.S. Capitol,” Capitol Police stated, indicating the primary focus of their ongoing inquiry. As of Monday afternoon, authorities had not released the suspect’s identity or detailed any charges that might be filed.
Scene Investigation and Vehicle Contents
Law enforcement personnel remained present at the scene throughout the afternoon. Eyewitnesses observed officers carefully removing items from a Ford Bronco, which was parked askew in front of the barricade. From a distance, these items appeared to include personal belongings and provisions such as water bottles.
A canine companion, which had been inside the vehicle, was safely retrieved and subsequently transported by an SPCA vehicle.
