Powerful Earthquakes Rattle Venezuela, Prompting Stadium Evacuations
Ground Trembles During Live Baseball Game as Quakes Hit Venezuela
Venezuela experienced a series of powerful seismic events on Wednesday evening, with one significant earthquake causing players and spectators to flee a baseball stadium as the ground violently shook. Footage circulating on social media captured the dramatic scene, showing fans rushing towards exits amid the trembling stadium.
Magnitude 7.5 Quake Strikes Near Coastal City
Initial reports geological surveys indicated the first earthquake registered at a magnitude of 7.1. This was swiftly followed less than a minute later by a more powerful tremor measuring 7.5. The epicenters of these seismic activities were situated close to the coastal city of Morón, approximately 104 miles west of the capital, Caracas. The shallow nature of both quakes amplified the intensity of the shaking felt across an extensive region.
These earthquakes are being described as some of the most significant to impact Venezuela in over a century. The tremors occurred shortly after 6 p.m. local time. In Caracas, residents were observed evacuating buildings that were swaying, remaining outside in visible shock as entire walls collapsed, exposing the interiors of homes and businesses to the street. Dust clouds were also noted in several neighborhoods of the capital, areas typically bustling with activity from restaurants and other commercial establishments. Even after sunset, many people remained on the streets, some sitting on the ground with their pets amidst the accumulating dust.
Structural Damage Reported, Residents Urged to Stay Outdoors
Authorities have confirmed structural damage in various parts of Caracas, including reports of collapsed walls and compromised buildings. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello advised residents to stay in safe outdoor locations, emphasizing that aftershocks could further destabilize already weakened structures.
Caracas resident Hector Ricci described the experience, stating, “It started off gently and then gradually grew, and in the end, we all had to leave our houses, go outside and gather together.” Another resident, Roberto Damas, recounted the intensity of the shaking, noting, “The building really shook from side to side. Unreal. The force was incredibly strong.” He added, “We were walking and it was tossing us around. Everything in the apartment fell. Thank God we were able to get out.”
Widespread Impact and Subsequent Advisories
The seismic activity was felt throughout much of northern Venezuela and extended into neighboring Colombia. Temporary tsunami advisories were issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands but were later canceled after officials determined the immediate threat had subsided.
As of Wednesday night, officials were still working to ascertain the full extent of the damage and its human toll. The scale of the devastation and any potential casualties were not immediately clear.
