In a significant turn of events for the U.S. Men’s National Team, star forward Folarin Balogun has been cleared to play in the crucial Round of 16 World Cup match against Belgium on Monday. This decision follows an intense review of the red card Balogun received during the team’s previous game against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a suspension that initially threatened to sideline him for this pivotal encounter.

A Controversial Red Card

The incident occurred when Balogun inadvertently stepped on the foot of Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. The match officials, utilizing VAR, reviewed the play and ultimately deemed it a red card offense, leading to Balogun’s expulsion from the game. The decision sparked considerable debate and concern among U.S. Soccer supporters, given Balogun’s importance to the team’s attack, especially after he had scored against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Code and Suspended Sanctions

The situation took a surprising turn thanks to a specific clause within FIFA’s disciplinary code. As reported, this code allows for the “judicial body” to decide on fully or partially suspending the implementation of a disciplinary measure. This provision essentially means a red card, while issued, can be put on hold under certain conditions.

The code further elaborates that if a player under a suspended sanction commits a similar offense during a probationary period, the original suspension can be revoked, and the player may face additional penalties. In Balogun’s case, the judicial body opted to suspend the implementation of his red card for a probationary period lasting one year. This means the red card will not affect his immediate playing status, provided he avoids further similar infractions.

U.S. Soccer’s Reaction and Player’s Perspective

U.S. Soccer expressed its satisfaction with the outcome. A spokesperson stated, “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow. Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”

Balogun himself had previously spoken about the incident, emphasizing its unintentional nature. “First and foremost, it was totally unintentional, which I’m sure a lot of people know,” he told reporters. “But, you know, I think the choice of the referee was, of course, his choice, but I don’t think it was the correct call. I think a yellow card would have been fair due to it not being intentional.” He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, noting, “There’s not many places I can place my foot in such a scenario. But it’s happened, and it’s something that I have to accept and move forward from.”

The young forward also reflected on the emotional rollercoaster the situation presented. “There’s been lots of different emotions. I’ve been upset, I’ve been happy, it’s been surreal to be honest,” he admitted. “But for me it was just important to stay calm. I never want to react out of anger and emotion. There’s still lots of people we’re inspiring. Little kids, boys and girls are watching. We have to show them the correct way to handle things even when you think it’s unjust, so I felt I did that. I’m happy with the support, not just I’m receiving but the team. I think we’re all looking forward to seeing what we can do against Belgium.”

Navigating World Cup Regulations

The path to Balogun’s availability was complicated by standard World Cup regulations. Typically, decisions made by referees regarding
