Senator Kelly: Extreme Left Policies Could Cost Democrats
Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona has voiced concerns that radical policy proposals from the far-left wing of the Democratic Party could undermine the party’s electoral prospects, potentially costing them seats in upcoming elections. Speaking in an interview on “Next Question with Katie Couric,” Kelly pointed to stances such as abolishing police, eliminating prisons, removing border controls, and defunding the Pentagon as examples of ideas that alienate mainstream American voters.
“There are folks out there that say things that just don’t make sense to the American people, like abolish the police or get rid of jails and prisons, get rid of the border, defund the Pentagon,” Kelly stated. “Those things don’t make sense.”
When questioned about whether the Democratic Party’s internal ideological divisions could hinder its candidates in the midterm elections and potentially impact the 2028 presidential race, Kelly acknowledged the risk. “It could cost us some seats,” he admitted. “I think that’s very, very possible.”
Kelly sought to distance himself from the more progressive elements within his party, suggesting that voters sometimes conflate the most extreme proposals with the broader Democratic platform. “Some of them, I think, associate it with Democrats,” Kelly observed. “That’s not the Democratic Party I’m in. Those aren’t the policies I support.”
Voter Sentiment and Polling Data
Kelly’s cautionary remarks come at a time when Democratic leaders have been facing consistently unfavorable polling numbers. An April survey by Fox News indicated that only 42% of registered voters held a favorable view of the Democratic Party, with a significant 58% viewing it unfavorably. Furthermore, 61% of respondents felt that Democrats were concentrating on the wrong issues.
Adding to this picture, a Quinnipiac University poll released in May revealed a stark disapproval of the job Democrats in Congress were doing, with only 20% of registered voters expressing approval and a substantial 72% expressing disapproval. Even among self-identified Democratic voters, the approval rating was low, with 41% approving and 50% disapproving.
Primary Election Results and Shifting Dynamics
Senator Kelly’s warning follows a series of primary election victories by candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). While these wins highlight a growing progressive influence, they also underscore the potential for ideological clashes within the party. For instance, a DSA-backed candidate, Melat Kiros, reportedly defeated longtime Representative Diana DeGette in Colorado, and DSA member Darializa Avila Chevalier unseated Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York. Additionally, New York state lawmaker Claire Valdez, endorsed by the DSA, secured the Democratic primary nomination to succeed retiring Representative Nydia Velázquez.
These outcomes have amplified discussions about the party’s direction and its appeal to a broader electorate. The tension between moderate and progressive wings is a recurring theme as the party navigates the complex political landscape.
Kelly’s Potential 2028 Presidential Ambitions
In a notable aside during the interview, Senator Kelly revealed that he is “seriously considering” a presidential campaign in 2028. He mentioned that his wife, former Representative Gabby Giffords, is actively encouraging him to enter the race. Kelly indicated that his final decision would hinge on family considerations and his assessment of his chances of winning.
Reflecting on Giffords’s perspective, Kelly shared, “She’s about, you know, what’s the best thing for the country? She is all about public service, and everybody needs to do their part.” He further elaborated on the decision-making process, stating, “If we come to the conclusion that, you know, I’m the right person for this and my family’s on board, and we also consider what it takes…”
The Arizona Democrat has cultivated a political infrastructure that could support a national campaign. He noted his success in directing substantial funds to candidates he deemed viable, while consciously avoiding those promoting what he described as “unrealistic proposals.”
“I have the ability to, you know, raise money. I’m pretty good at that,” Kelly remarked. “I have raised or given away combined $10 million during this election cycle,” he added. “I tend to steer away from the stuff that is never going to happen, that is just about creating a lot of noise.”
A Glimmer of Hope in Polling?
Despite the party’s struggles with public perception, a recent Fox News poll offered a potential counterpoint, showing Democrats leading Republicans by seven percentage points among registered voters on the generic congressional ballot (53% to 46%). The same poll indicated that 68% of Democrats expressed extreme motivation to vote in the upcoming November elections, compared to 57% of Republicans. This level of Democratic support on the generic ballot represents the highest recorded by Fox News since 1996, suggesting that voter enthusiasm could play a significant role in the upcoming contests.
