Abdul El-Sayed Addresses Hasan Piker Link, Jewish Democrat Rift at Michigan Convention
LANSING, Mich. — Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed found himself fielding persistent questions about his past associations and policy stances at the state Democratic Party’s Nominating Convention on Saturday. Amidst the political gathering at the Lansing Center, El-Sayed faced a barrage of inquiries from reporters concerning his connection to online personality Hasan Piker and his views on Israel and Gaza, issues that have created friction with some within the Democratic Party, particularly Jewish Democrats.
El-Sayed Downplays Hasan Piker Association
The relationship between El-Sayed and Hasan Piker, a prominent far-left streamer with whom El-Sayed campaigned during his primary race, was a recurring theme. Multiple journalists pressed El-Sayed on the matter, but he consistently sought to pivot the conversation back to the pressing issues facing Michigan residents. “We’re in the state of Michigan. If you want to make this race about a streamer in California, I just think you’re missing the boat,” El-Sayed stated to the press. “This is about affordability in Michigan. This is about seeing a doctor in Michigan. This is about Donald Trump’s disastrous policies in Michigan. That’s what I’m focused on right now.”
El-Sayed characterized Piker as a figure from California whose relevance to the Michigan Senate race is negligible. “I am not interested in a conversation about a social media person in California. And to folks who want to make this about a social media person in California, let’s not forget what actually matters in our politics, what our politics are really about,” he elaborated. He added, “I don’t ever want my comments to hurt anybody’s feelings. It’s important to me that people understand that I take serious the pain of all communities in this state. But I don’t want to have a conversation about a Twitch streamer in California. This is not a serious conversation.”
Controversy Over Comments on Synagogue Attack
Beyond the Piker connection, El-Sayed also addressed criticism stemming from remarks he made in March following an attack on a Michigan synagogue. Federal investigators reported that a gunman, allegedly inspired by Hezbollah, rammed his vehicle into the place of worship with the intent of harming Jewish individuals. In response to the incident at the time, El-Sayed had said, “Hurt people, hurt people.”
These comments drew criticism from within his own party, including from Michigan Secretary of State Dana Nessel, who discussed the remarks in a recent interview. Nessel had also opted not to attend the convention, citing concerns about antisemitism within the Democratic Party. El-Sayed clarified his previous statement, telling reporters that his words “might have been misconstrued to be justifying something I did not intend to justify.”
He subsequently offered an apology: “To anybody who feels like my comments may have been hurtful, I’m really sorry. That was not my intention. We condemned that terrorist attack. We condemned it outright,” El-Sayed said. “What I was trying to do was offer context for why it happened, but it wasn’t the time for context and you don’t ever want to trample somebody’s pain.”
Calls for Unity Amidst Divisions
El-Sayed emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to unite. The convention itself was themed around “unity,” a message that resonated throughout the event as candidates and attendees gathered amidst the controversies surrounding the party’s most prominent statewide candidate.
Other candidates seeking office also took the stage, presenting a unified front and frequently highlighting their shared opposition to former President Donald Trump as a common ground for Democrats in Michigan. The convention aimed to rally the party base, underscoring the importance of solidarity as the election cycle progresses.
