Gallego’s Family Narrative Challenged Amid Campaign Finance Questions

Senator Ruben Gallego, currently navigating campaign finance scrutiny, has recently emphasized his commitment to family, sharing a personal account of prioritizing his wife and newborn daughter during a past campaign. Gallego stated in a social media video that his daughter Isla was born during a highly competitive Senate race, during which he took two months off from campaigning to support his wife following an unplanned C-section and welcomed their newborn.

“Being a husband and a father matters more to me than any campaign, or any job,” Gallego said, underscoring the importance he places on familial roles.

Conservative Critics Respond

Gallego’s portrayal has drawn sharp criticism from conservative figures and former political spokespersons. The timing of his remarks is particularly notable as he faces questions about the use of campaign funds, with some suggesting they may have been used as a personal slush fund. There are also ongoing discussions about a potential presidential bid in 2028.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson commented on social media, suggesting Gallego displayed a lack of awareness. “He’s either terribly arrogant or has zero self awareness. Probably both,” Jackson posted. “And who’s running his comms operation that thought this post would go over well? Just unbelievably bad instincts to post this given what everybody knows about his history.”

GOP consultant Matt Wolking echoed this sentiment, predicting the public response. “The ratio was entirely predictable and now even more people will learn about his behavior,” Wolking stated.

Matt Whitlock, formerly with the National Republican Senatorial Committee, directly addressed Gallego’s past. “Do you think people are unaware that you left your first wife when she was about to deliver your baby?” he questioned online.

The campaign account for Kari Lake, who previously challenged Gallego, also weighed in, seeking clarification. “To clarify: this child is from your second marriage, after you left your first wife nine months pregnant to be with your lobbyist mistress — correct?” the account posted.

Further commentary came from Matt Van Swol, who stated, “You literally gave your wife divorce papers when she was 9 months pregnant. You think people are just not gonna call you on that???”

Katie Miller, wife of White House policy advisor Stephen Miller, also shared her perspective. “Ruben Gallego served his wife divorce papers when she was nine months pregnant. He then entered into a relationship with a 25-year-old lobbyist,” Miller wrote.

Gallego’s Wife Responds to Accusations

In response to these criticisms, Gallego’s current wife, Sydney Gallego, addressed Katie Miller directly on social media. “Check your facts,” she urged. “Ruben & I didn’t even meet until years later. Our whole family has a strong relationship. Wish I was surprised that Katie Miller’s lying about us. But these are the same sick people who want ICE ripping families apart. It’s not about family at all.”

Sydney Gallego further clarified in a separate post, “Thanks Katie for providing that clarification that Ruben and I met over a year and a half after his divorce, not while he was still married. Maybe once and for all the lies about the origin of our relationship will subside. Appreciate your help making that happen.”

Campaign Fund Use Under Scrutiny

Beyond personal history, Gallego has also faced allegations regarding his campaign finances. He has defended his use of campaign funds for travel to fundraising events, arguing that such travel is necessary to connect with donors in relevant locations.

“Are these at nice venues? Yes, it’s where the donors are and it’s part of campaigning,” Gallego explained online. He also justified a Super Bowl fundraiser held in Arizona, stating, “The Super Bowl was in Arizona, I represent Arizona. We threw a Super Bowl fundraiser in Arizona where we raised money for my election in 2023. That’s what you do.” He added, “You have to go where the money is to raise money.”

However, reports have surfaced suggesting that campaign funds may have been used for family travel, including trips to Disneyland and tickets to the Super Bowl, which critics argue fall outside typical campaign activities.

Former Jill Biden spokesperson Michael Larosa also criticized Gallego’s past actions, stating, “Yes, Ruben Gallego was so vital to his wife’s maternal health that when she was pregnant, he didn’t take time off to support her—he served her with divorce papers ahead of delivery.”
