Woman Charged in Parents’ Murder on 30th Birthday
A woman with ties to a group known as the Zizians has been formally charged in connection with the shooting deaths of her parents. Prosecutors allege that Michelle Zajko orchestrated the murders on her 30th birthday, acting in concert with others.
Charges Filed in Double Homicide
Michelle Zajko, 33, faces charges including murder, burglary, and conspiracy stemming from the New Year’s Eve 2022 incident that claimed the lives of Rita and Richard Zajko. The couple was discovered shot to death in their Chester Heights, Pennsylvania, residence.
According to Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse, investigators believe Zajko played a role in planning the homicides. While the identity of the individual who fired the fatal shots remains unknown, authorities are confident in Zajko’s involvement.
“At this time we do not know who her co-conspirators were, but we are very certain that Michelle Zajko was in the home and arranged for the death of her parents,” Rouse stated. He further indicated that if Zajko did not pull the trigger herself, she was unequivocally aligned with those who did.
Investigation Uncovers Key Evidence
The case against Zajko was developed through extensive investigative efforts spanning several years. This included detailed cellphone analysis, examination of ballistic evidence, and review of footage from a neighbor’s doorbell camera. This video captured two individuals arriving at the Zajko residence shortly before the killings. Audio from the recording reportedly includes someone exclaiming “Mom!” moments before the gunshots, according to prosecutors.
Investigators also recovered shell casings that forensic analysis linked to ammunition found on Zajko’s property in Vermont, which includes a backyard firing range. This discovery provides a crucial link between the crime scene and the suspect.
Estrangement and Unanswered Plea
Zajko has consistently denied any involvement in her parents’ deaths. In an “Open Letter to the World” penned in April 2025, she asserted, “I didn’t murder my parents.”
Prosecutors revealed that Zajko had become estranged from her parents in the year leading up to their deaths. Significantly, on the day of the murders, Rita Zajko sent her daughter a text message expressing remorse for their strained relationship and extending birthday wishes. District Attorney Rouse noted that this conciliatory message went unanswered.
Broader Suspicions and Connections
Authorities have long considered Zajko a person of interest in the case. Beyond the charges related to her parents’ murders, she is also accused of providing the firearm used in the January 2025 killing of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland. This incident is among several deaths that investigators have connected to alleged members of the Zizians.
