GOP Candidate Advances in South Carolina’s Coastal District
Honeycutt Secures Republican Nod in SC’s 1st Congressional District
Charleston County Councilwoman Jenny Costa Honeycutt has taken a significant step toward securing a seat in Congress, emerging victorious from the Republican runoff election in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. Her win positions her to potentially succeed current GOP Representative Nancy Mace.
Honeycutt defeated state Representative Mark Smith in Tuesday’s runoff, according to election results. Both candidates had previously advanced from a crowded field in the Republican primary held earlier this month, where neither secured the required 50% threshold to avoid a runoff.
Key Race Developments
The 1st Congressional District, encompassing a substantial portion of South Carolina’s coastline, has a long history of Republican representation, spanning over four decades. The seat was briefly held by a Democrat during the 2018 election cycle. Notable past Republican occupants of this seat include current Senator Tim Scott and former Governor Mark Sanford.
Representative Nancy Mace, who has represented the district for six years, opted not to seek re-election this year, instead running for governor. Her tenure in the U.S. House has been marked by a complex relationship with former President Donald Trump, despite her past support.
General Election Outlook
Honeycutt, who identifies as an “unapologetic conservative,” will now face the winner of the Democratic runoff. The Democratic contest is between attorney Mac Deford and retired Coast Guard Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore.
While Honeycutt is anticipated to be the frontrunner in the general election, the race’s outlook has seen a slight adjustment. The Cook Political Report, a respected nonpartisan election analysis group, recently reclassified the district’s rating from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican,” indicating a potentially more competitive contest than previously assessed.
