Knicks Poised for Historic Celebration After Championship Victory

New York City is gearing up for a monumental celebration as the Knicks stand on the precipice of a championship parade, their first in over five decades. The team secured the franchise’s inaugural NBA title since 1973 with a decisive five-game series victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

A Familiar Foe in Trae Young

In recent years, basketball fans in New York have become intimately familiar with Trae Young, who frequently tormented the Knicks at the iconic Madison Square Garden. His clutch shots and postgame theatrics often ignited a chorus of boos from the fervent New York faithful. This animosity became a defining backdrop whenever the Knicks faced the Atlanta Hawks, seemingly fueling Young’s performance against the team in blue and orange.

Young, who was traded to the Washington Wizards in January, has a history of engaging in social media exchanges with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The NBA All-Star and the politician previously sparred over the inflated prices of Knicks playoff tickets at Madison Square Garden.

Mayor Mamdani Reignites Past Feud

Mayor Mamdani appeared to revisit this past rivalry on Wednesday. When questioned about whether Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama had supplanted Young as New York’s preeminent basketball villain, the Democratic mayor of the nation’s largest city expressed a surprising lack of recognition for the former Hawks star.

“I’m not quite sure who you’re referring to,” Mamdani responded. “But Victor Wembanyama is certainly the most recent antagonist we’ve encountered, yes – and he has been vanquished.”

Recalling the 2021 Playoff Series

During the first round of the 2021 Eastern Conference playoffs, Young averaged an impressive 29.2 points as the Hawks defeated the Knicks in five games. Following a dramatic 107-105 overtime victory in Game 1, he famously placed a finger to his lips in a silencing gesture directed at the Madison Square Garden crowd after scoring a game-high 32 points.

At one point during that contentious series, a visibly frustrated Knicks fan was observed attempting to spit at Young. The star point guard, however, remained unfazed, interpreting the hostility as evidence that he had successfully gotten under the skin of the Knicks fanbase.

“Clearly, if you dislike me that intensely, I must be doing something right,” Young had commented at the time. “I embrace it and focus on my team and helping us win. Ultimately, we’ll have the last laugh if we achieve that.”

Championship Parade Details

Jalen Brunson was honored as the 2026 NBA Finals MVP following Saturday’s series-clinching win. The highly anticipated championship parade is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, traversing Manhattan and culminating at New York City Hall.

Mayor Mamdani characterized the parade as a historic milestone for the Knicks and a long-awaited reward for generations of New Yorkers.

“This will mark the first ticker-tape parade in Knicks history, offering New Yorkers the chance to celebrate a moment that truly feels like it has been an entire lifetime in the making,” Mamdani stated. “For those of my generation and a bit older, we have indeed waited this long. There have been countless heartbreaks, numerous near misses, and years where we optimistically declared ‘this is the year.’ To see it finally happen now is beyond anything we could have asked for as New Yorkers.”
