Trump Shifts Oklahoma Endorsement Amid Candidate Suspension
Presidential Endorsement Reversal in Oklahoma Congressional Race
Former President Donald Trump dramatically altered his backing in an Oklahoma congressional primary race Wednesday, withdrawing his support for candidate Jackson Lahmeyer and instead endorsing Republican rival Mark Tedford. This significant shift occurred just before Lahmeyer announced he was suspending his own campaign.
Lahmeyer asserted that his decision to withdraw from the race was made independently the previous evening, predating Trump’s endorsement switch. He stated, “I made my decision to drop out of the race last night. I decided to choose my wife over my ambition. I informed my wife about my decision late last night and then my campaign team early this morning. My decision did not take place because of the decision of POTUS this afternoon.”
Primary Results and Runoff Implications
Preliminary results from the primary election indicated Tedford secured first place with 32.2% of the vote, while Lahmeyer followed with 25.9%. Both Republicans were slated to advance to a runoff election for the opportunity to succeed Representative Kevin Hern, who is currently seeking a U.S. Senate seat.
Trump’s Public Statement and Endorsement Criteria
Trump initially championed Lahmeyer as a “MAGA Warrior” and a long-standing ally, making Wednesday’s reversal one of the more surprising developments of the current midterm election cycle. Around 2:23 p.m., Trump revealed his support for Tedford via a post on Truth Social. “I greatly appreciate Jackson Lahmeyer’s hard work under difficult circumstances — He has always been with me, and I will always be with him,” Trump wrote. “But, when it comes to the current Congressional race for Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District, I will be supporting America First Patriot, Mark Tedford.”
The former president characterized Tedford as “Pro Trump and MAGA all the way,” affirming he had the state lawmaker’s “Complete and Total Endorsement.”
Lahmeyer’s Campaign Suspension Announcement
Approximately nine minutes later, at about 2:32 p.m., Lahmeyer announced his campaign suspension on X, formerly Twitter. “After prayerful consideration with my wife, Kendra, and my team over the last twenty four hours, I’ve made the difficult decision to suspend my campaign for Congress,” Lahmeyer stated. “I do not want to be a distraction to my family, my church, and the great people of Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District, who deserve a strong conservative voice representing them in Washington.”
Background and Campaign Challenges
Trump’s reassessment marked a notable departure from his earlier endorsement of Lahmeyer, whom he had publicly praised prior to Oklahoma’s June 16 primary. The abrupt change in endorsement followed a challenging period for Lahmeyer’s campaign. Reports surfaced concerning Lahmeyer’s text message communications with former Miss Oklahoma USA Caitlin Simmons Key. Lahmeyer later acknowledged having “crossed a boundary line through text messaging” while refuting what he described as a misrepresentation of the situation.
Neither former President Trump nor representatives from his team offered a public explanation for the decision to alter the endorsement. With Lahmeyer’s withdrawal, Tedford is now positioned as the presumptive Republican nominee in the heavily Republican district.
