Devastating Quakes Rock Venezuela, Claiming Lives and Causing Widespread Damage

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction and a significant number of casualties. Initial reports the affected regions indicate a devastating loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure.

Official Casualty Figures Emerge Amidst Ongoing Assessments

Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodríguez, has officially reported that at least 32 people have died and over 700 have been injured as a result of the seismic events. These figures represent the first official casualty count released by the government as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the disaster.

The back-to-back earthquakes caused widespread damage, with the capital city of Caracas experiencing significant building damage. Rescue crews have been seen sifting through rubble in search of survivors.

President Trump Vows Swift U.S. Assistance

President Donald Trump commented on the disaster late Wednesday, describing the earthquakes as having caused “a devastating number of deaths.” He stated that the United States is prepared to offer immediate assistance to Venezuela.

In a statement, President Trump declared, “The U.S.A. stands ready, willing, and able to help! I have instructed all agencies of our government to get ready to move quickly. We will be there for our new and great friends.” He added that early reports Venezuela were “not good.”

Geological Survey Issues Rare Red Alert

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that an initial magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck at 6:04 p.m. ET, with its epicenter located approximately 15 miles east-northeast of San Felipe. This was followed just 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 quake, centered about 14 miles southeast of Yumare.

The USGS issued a rare red alert, warning that “High casualties and extensive damage are probable, and the disaster is likely widespread.” These earthquakes are considered among the strongest to have hit Venezuela in over a century.

State of Emergency Declared; Calls for Unity

Following the earthquakes, President Rodríguez declared a state of emergency. The seismic activity was accompanied by nearly two dozen aftershocks.

During a televised address, President Rodríguez urged the Venezuelan population to remain calm and emphasized the need for unity. She reiterated these calls when announcing the official casualty figures.

U.S. Officials Coordinate Relief Efforts

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau confirmed that American officials are in communication with Venezuelan authorities and are actively working to deliver aid to the nation.

“The U.S. stands with the Venezuelan people in the aftermath of this evening’s devastating earthquakes,” Landau wrote. “We’re in touch with the authorities and mobilizing assistance.”

The State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs stated that it is closely monitoring the situation. “The U.S. Government is closely monitoring the aftermath of a large earthquake in Venezuela,” the bureau said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and are committed to supporting the people of Venezuela during this difficult time.”

U.S. citizens in Venezuela are advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and stay updated with embassy advisories.
