NYPD Officers Fatally Shoot Man Wielding Butcher Knife
New York City police officers fatally shot a 54-year-old man on Sunday afternoon after he advanced toward them armed with a large butcher knife inside a Lower East Side apartment building, according to authorities. The incident unfolded shortly after 4 p.m. at 126 Ludlow Street, where officers had been dispatched following multiple emergency calls reporting an assault.
Confrontation on the Staircase
Upon entering the building, responding officers discovered a trail of blood leading up the stairwell, NYPD Assistant Chief Melissa Eger stated during a press briefing Sunday evening. As the officers ascended, they encountered Wei Chan, 54, descending the stairs. Police reported that Chan was carrying what they described as a substantial butcher knife.
According to Eger, officers repeatedly commanded Chan to show his hands and drop the weapon. Despite these clear directives, the man continued to advance toward the officers while still brandishing the knife. It was at this point that the officers discharged their firearms, striking Chan.
Victim and Father Injured
Chan was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Assistant Chief Eger noted that Wei Chan had no prior criminal history with the NYPD but did have a documented history of mental health issues with the department.
During the incident, officers also found Wei Chan’s 75-year-old father, Cheung Chan, inside the building. The elder Chan was suffering from a laceration to his head, which investigators believe was inflicted by his son prior to the police arrival. Cheung Chan was also taken to the hospital, and his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Officer Evaluation and Investigation
The officers involved in the shooting were transported to a hospital for routine evaluation, a standard procedure following such events. Eger commended the officers’ response, stating, “Their actions are a reminder of how officers run towards danger and not away from it.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed he had been briefed on the situation and assured the public that a thorough internal investigation would be conducted. “As with every incident in which NYPD officers discharge their weapons, there will be an internal investigation, and body-worn camera footage of the incident will be released,” Mamdani posted on the social media platform X.
The full circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter remain under active investigation by the relevant authorities.
